Dear Friends,
We are pleased to announce that the Tokyo Philippine Seminar
2001 will be held on May 12 (Sat.), 2001 at Sophia University. This seminar is
organized spontaneously by Japanese and Filipino scholars currently residing in
Japan.
The theme of the seminar: "In Search of New Dimensions
of Philippine Studies: Reinterpretation and Remaking of the Philippine
Nation" shall encompass the discussion of some of the most fascinating
consequences of the formation and changes of the Philippine historiography
before and after independence, the restructuring process of the Philippine
state as well as current critical issues on Islam movements in Mindanao region,
and the new interpretations of the Philippine culture and minorities. In this
way, this seminar seeks multi-disciplinary approaches to understand the
Philippine history, politics, society and culture. The seminar shall address
the above wide-ranging topics in three sessions: "Historiography,"
"Political Economy," and "Culture & Minorities."
We shall welcome an exciting array of speakers: Patricio N.
Abinales (Kyoto U), Reynaldo C. Ileto (Tokyo U of Foreign Studies), Temario
Rivera (ICU), Midori Kawashima (Sophia U), Hidefumi Ogawa (Tokyo U of Foreign
Studies) and Caroline S. Hau (Kyoto U).
